Equipping people...
Connect trains local volunteers to offer practical support to the lonely or isolated within the community of Pitsmoor, Sheffield. It is a project born out of the vision of Christ Church Pitsmoor and supported by local Health Visitors, GPs, accommodation providers and many other groups.
...to build relationships...
Working in partnership with these other agencies, the Project Coordinator seeks to identify those who are socially isolated or excluded. The Coordinator then visits to introduce themselves and assess the person’s needs. We are only able to offer low level support and friendship, so occasionally we are not able help, but whenever possible the Coordinator will then link the person with a volunteer “Befriender” - this person will have completed our comprehensive six-week training course and is regularly supervised and supported by the Coordinator. The Befriender will then offer whatever practical support is appropriate - it may simply be a regular visit for a cup of tea and a chat, or it may be trips out to the shops or doctors, or it may involve helping link them to Adult Learning Groups etc.
...to strengthen community.
There are many benefits to the scheme. The Befrienders (most of whom are from this community) are equipped and empowered to help and serve others. The isolation of the “friend” is overcome and genuine friendships are formed. Often bridges are built between people of different cultures and backgrounds. Community is strengthened.
